College Watch R Us: U of Delaware
We went to visit UD a few weeks ago, mostly because they have a degree that Bug is interested in – Materials and Cultural Preservation. (aka Museum Studies) Not that the degree will get him any kind of real job. But if he plays his cards right, it might get him something reasonable whereby he can afford to live.
We went on a day where all the kids were off school – and the auditorium was Packed. UD has a nice presentation – first a movie, where they use various musical groups from the college as background for the photos and information they flash on the screen. Then the Admissions Director talks to the crowd for a while, before passing us on to the student tour guides.
As far as our guide went, we lucked out. According to her, she was one of the “faster” ones – and she did not disappoint. We were the first group out – we walked through the green, which was very impressive. I have to say the setup reminds me a little of James Madison, which I’d visited this summer – a friend works there. We saw a few buildings inside, which were very nice – they reminded me of just about any ivy league college movie you’ve ever seen.
After the tour was over, the guide took us to the music building. That was singularly impressive (outside – beautiful) and then also unimpressive (a gym is their main music function room!). I am not sure what that is about…. and then, of course, the requisite visit to the Services office. You might remember the article I posted back a ways, so you know I could not leave without talking to them.
The building is active – this was not the case at the other colleges – many students all over, mostly ESL students, however. The lady we spoke with was very knowledgeable, and seemed to want to be able to help. She gave me a lot of paperwork, which I have yet to read through.
The article, however, might be a little misleading, I’m sorry to say. Of course, no one can ever get all the professors to cooperate, although UD seems to have a decent system in place. I don’t know that they really are going to help tailor the residential situation, either, although she said they do coordinate with housing and would work with us on that. UD has that corporation handling their dorms that WCU and MU have.
The big cons? Party School. Frat Hell. HUGE (he would get lost) – and it’s getting BIGGER. Not the safest campus (crime is a fairly regular occurrence). Dorms are not dry, either – 21 year olds can have alcohol in their rooms. Um, how dumb is that?
The pros are that it’s not too far, and their schedules are really flexible. So if Bug wanted to go to WC (*free!) and take his grunt classes, he could do that for a couple of years, then transfer to UD. They also have a lot of dorm space, and they don’t kick the upperclassmen out. So that’s a plus, at least in his opinion…
We’ll see. I found another college this week, and we drove through the campus this weekend. That will be our next visit….

Hmmm, interesting visit, not sure a party school would be a good fit for Bug. Of course, you’d know that better than me..
Not sure what to tell you on the alcohol thing, it seems strange to me, as well.
No, a party school would not be good. The problem is, of course, that most of them are party schools. The ones with heavy frat contingents are worse.
I have never heard of ANY college allowing booze in the dorms!!!
