Autism What? You Fill in the Blank….
I have been holding my tongue on this for a couple of weeks. It’s been discussed everywhere - including Autism Vox, over at Mike Stanton’s blog and also at Left Brain, Right Brain. But I’ve read too many other stupid opinions - including the Oprah Board - and I can’t stand it any more.
First, my caveat…
The Following is the Opinion of Moi;) :
I am not one of those who thinks a vaccine causes “autism”. I think thimerosal and other mercury agents in vaccines causes mercury poisoning in the form of small amounts building up over time from the numerous shots to which our young children’s developing nervous systems are subjected...hence the quotes around the word “autism” as I use it. It is also my opinion that that is what my son has, courtesy of the United States Government. What Bug has presents itself with autistic-like symptoms, but there is no way in hell I think it’s TRUE autism.
While I agree that vaccines are at issue, I am not sure why the rumor of the MMR vaccine and autism being connected still remains. There never was thimerosal in that vaccine - which is supposedly the cause of autism (but in reality, the cause of the probable mercury poisoning “epidemic"). “MMR vaccines cause autism” is the “Saddam caused 9/11” of the medical world. NOT. People hear it over and over, but it doesn’t sink in.
IMO, MMR shots can and SHOULD be split up over 6 months. MMR taken all at once in a child whose immune system is ALREADY weak from too much mercury causes all kinds of intestinal and stomach problems - mostly due to the child not being able to absorb nutrient metals that the brain needs. Too much mercury starting with the Hep B shot given to them minutes after birth, adding on from the DPT shots, and whatever else your pediatrician deigns to give your kid. The damage done probably inclines those children toward the allergies to wheat, gluten, peanuts, greasy carb cravings, and all the other assorted food issues they have. And the 18-month shots just drive their entire systems over the edge. This is all Moi’s opinion, of course, basically developed over reading too much stuff on the internets.
Unfortunately, since the Dx of “autism” is what schools use to give our kids educational, social and other services. Schools don’t educate to the symptom or the need, until you have a Dx. THIS is a MAJOR result of spreading QUACK SCIENCE. Most parents have to fight schools to get every little thing so that their children have a chance at an education and/or living on their own someday. We NEED a label, until we get the current moron out of the White House so we can get rid of NCLB, and the schools can get back to TEACHING to the NEED.....if what is going on with our kids were the appropriate Dx (mercury poisoning), it would be a lot easier for the public to get on board with acceptance. People don’t want their kid to “get” something like autism because they think it’s not preventable. But mercury poisoning is something totally preventable, and if people knew the truth, they would ALL get on board. But, until then, “autism” will just be another “overdiagnosed” diagnosis. (Can we think of another name for this stuff?) But I digress....
Jenny McCarthy is not helping things. Even if she thinks she is.
Jenny McCarthy has an autistic son. She writes a book, ok, fine. She does People Magazine. I have no problem with people furthering autism awareness (even if it IS a misdiagnosis, for now, because our children need access to services). BUT…
Jenny McCarthy then opens her mouth and proceeds to wreak havoc on all the progress we have made with autism awareness and the public view. She creates a website called “Indigo Moms” and takes the seriousnesss of what is called autism down about 500 notches. Her son is a “Crystal child” and that she was an “Indigo Adult”.... (please don’t puke here...) So, by associating new age idontknowwhatthefrigtocall it with autism, she succeeds in enabling people to think we’re all nuts.
Then Jenny takes down the Indigo Moms site, and abandons the support group she created with nothing more than a “this site will not be returning.” (Nice, lady. Even if the people do believe in that hoodoo, the idea of just dumping their support system is disgusting.) She also tells the world that her boyfriend, Jim Carrey, is an “autism whisperer”...... What, because he is good with Evan? Aren’t men allowed to be good with kids, let alone autistic kids? And Then She Does Oprah.
Now, going on Oprah could have been good. Like Ginger says here, she got the word out about the vaccine issue. However, there was no mention of mercury poisoning. It was the MMR Caused 9/11 thing. On top of that, she tells the world that autism is reversible. Oh, really? Please give me the magic bullet, lady. I HATE when people get others hopes up like this. OH, and because of her expertise, she is the spokesperson of this group.
Evan’s intervention sounds a lot like Bug’s. Evan is now fully verbal, and he is also in regular classes. He had what she called “regressive autism.” Well, even without a Dx, so did Bug - but he never had chelation, GFCF, ABA, or any of that. I did what I thought would work, we used probiotics because my husband knows about nutrition and vitamins. Acidophilus enabled him to eat, he wasn’t nearly as much at a loss as those who didn’t know. I got Lovaas’ textbook and did some of the ABA with my son, and left the rest, sold the book on eBay. He had speech therapy, Fast ForWord, and a diet without chicken nuggets and fast food.... my son had also lost his speech, but was talking in paragraph conversations after doing Fast ForWord at the age of 5. He has always been fully included, he has good eye contact, at the age of 14-almost-15, he is in all regular classes now in 9th grade, as well as Honors Biology. The school says he has PDD-NOS, CHOP says Asperger’s. No one knows - because IT’S NOT AUTISM.
But - even with all this good stuff - IN NO WAY IS MY SON “CURED.” Being in regular classes, and being verbal, does not mean you don’t have “autism” or Autism! Ask Temple Grandin about that one!
Brain and neurological issues are tricky. You don’t know how badly the brain has been affected by the thimerosal and lack of nutrients until you need to use it in a different fashion. People with young children don’t see that far into the future. Elementary school and toddler age children are easy. Theory of mind and abstract thinking are generally not part of the picture, but they aren’t as obvious until kids are older - or people just don’t get that TOM is why kids can’t make friends at the playground. Wait until the LD issues kick in when the school work gets hard. Even better yet - Wait until her kid is hormonal....
We find new and different issues every year. “Autism” doesn’t go away. It just fakes you out.
