Introduction
Our Thomas family came to Pennsylvania from
Wales in the mid 1700s. We believe our original
ancestor to be Thomas Thomas, b. 1722 in
Wales, and his wife, Ann; they lived in Philadelphia.
Thomas died in 1786. There is a will on file
in Philadelphia for Ann Thomas which mentions
five children: Seth, Steber, Azariah, Heziah,
and Israel.
Our interest is in the descendants of Seth
Thomas.
Seth
Seth Thomas (b. 1749) and his wife Prudence
Edwards (b. 1754) lived in Nether Providence
Township, Delaware County, PA. He made shoes
for the Revolutionary War. His house still
stands. Here is a photo of it as it is today.

(This outbuilding was the former cobbler
shop.)
Seth and Prudence had seven children:
Israel, Seth C., David Edwards, William,
Sarah, Anna M. and Elizabeth.
Israel was granted the house in Seth's will. He
remained there until his death at the age
of 44. He was married to Sarah Lane, and
they had 8 children. Their descendants are
scattered due to his early death, and it
has been hard to reconnect this family. We
know they include the Pyle family of Chester
County, the Watkin(s) family of Delaware
County, and possibly the Thomas family of
Lancaster/Chester Counties.
Seth C. remained in Delaware County, was County
Coroner, on the school and church boards,
and was a prominent member of the community,
as have been many of his descendants. The
Hawkins descendants were the owners of Idlewild,
a vacation resort in Media.
David Edwards moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and established
a lumber company. His line includes a great
many old Baltimore and Harford County names
such as Price, Carter, Summers, and Davis.
Some of his descendants live in NC and FL.
William died at the age of 19.
Sarah married Joel West Edwards. Most of her children
remained in Delaware County. Not much is
known about this line.
Anna M. married Joseph Fell of Philadelphia. Her
line goes into New York, and includes the
line of the Reverend Reese Fell Alsop of
Brooklyn.
Elizabeth married Amos Davis of Radnor. Her line includes
the descendants of Robert Serrell Wood of
Osmington, England, and extends into the
Chinn and Walker families ofWashington DC,
and beyond.
